Understanding the Two Types of Mammography
2D Digital Mammography
- Captures two flat X-ray images of the breast (top-to-bottom and side-to-side).
- Effective for many patients and commonly used for routine screening.
- Limitation: overlapping breast tissue can sometimes obscure small abnormalities.
3D Tomographic Mammography (3D Mammogram)
- Takes multiple images of the breast from different angles and reconstructs them into a 3D view.
- Provides greater detail and helps reduce the chance of false positives and call-backs.
- Particularly helpful for women with dense breast tissue or those needing additional diagnostic clarity.
Both options are performed with care by our experienced technologists and interpreted by board-certified radiologists.
